In May 2020, QICGRE put plans into action to deliver one of Australia’s largest rooftop solar projects, which will be installed in stages across QICGRE’s Australian portfolio of retail assets.
The first centres to receive the technology in the initial stage of the project’s rollout are Domain Central, Grand Central, Hyperdome, Robina Town Centre and Watergardens.
This first tranche of the project will include installation of 15.8MW of rooftop solar across five assets. This will generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of more than 3,200 homes for a year, with over 17,500 tonnes of CO2 reduced annually.
The project will see Robina Town Centre’s rooftop solar system become the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Meanwhile, Domain Central, Queensland’s largest bulky goods shopping centre, will achieve net zero carbon emissions within three years, making it the first Australian shopping centre to do so. This 1.4MW system will take full advantage of the sunny north Queensland climate, generating electricity to the equivalent of charging 192 million mobile phones.
The installation of the solar technology aligns with QICGRE’s commitment to sustainability and actively improving environmental performance across our Australian portfolio, reducing grid electricity consumption and significantly lowering the carbon footprint of our assets. This project is a key step in our commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions for our core Australian retail assets by 2028.
