Tinko Czetwertynski

The eye has to travel

On an endless journey between the world’s most exotic and far flung destinations, Tinko Czetwertynski’s pictures exude the best of life and humanity – a sense of curiosity, diversity, and humour – and are imbued with a deep sense of emotion. These qualities, coupled with a unique sensitivity to his surroundings have led him to be commissioned by some of the world’s leading publications including Vanity Fair, Vogue Brasil, Condé Nast Traveler and Cabana. Here, Tinko shares with us a selection of photographs from his recent travels.

"This picture is of a dawn procession in Axum, Ethiopia, in 2017. Lately, I have been working on a series called The Wisdom Trips. I was invited to follow some admirable friends who are working on uniting twelve masters or elders from tribal spiritual traditions around the world for a two-day symposium in New York, focusing on meditation and exchange in order to explore new perspectives for humanity, towards the end of the year. The trip has taken me into the jungle in Brazil, the glaciers of Alaska, Gabon, Botswana, Australia, Mexico and Russia to name a few. This photograph is from one of those trips."

"This was taken at the famous Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi’s glass house outside São Paulo. I took this picture while British artist duo Gilbert & George were doing an installation in a show curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist. Brazil has its own set of uniforms, characters, and stances which sometimes have a humorous side, or a strong contrast with the environment, and this is something that I like to document in my work. In this particular moment, I feel that Gilbert & George showing their personalities in front of the uniformed staff made for a great shot."

"This is of a student practicing Shintaido in Tokyo, Japan. Also part of The Wisdom Trips, I went to meet Master Hiroyuki Aoki and attended one of his Shintaido/Kenbu classes. Shintaido has roots in Japanese martial arts but is also a form of artistic expression. The Sensei’s practice is about channelling energies, and by putting a crystal in front or very close to my lens, when taking these photographs, I created a soft but kaleidoscopic effect. I feel this technique captured more than just the image, and somehow illustrates the energy of the art form."

"This was one of the most magical mornings of my life. This is also from the grounds of the Saint Pantaleon church near Axum, Ethiopia. After the camel procession and hundreds of chanting people walking at dawn with candles, we headed to the Saint Pantaleon church. I experienced so many sensations, images, stories and observations that morning, I feel like it would need a small book to describe them all. This image captures the purity and sheer humanity of that morning."

"This picture was taken the first time I visited Paola, who is now my wife. We took a honeymoon trip around Brazil and rented a small, slow boat to go around the islands near Paraty. Our captain was an old man in all white and the water was perfect. Here, he’s attempting to attract fish by throwing bread into the water and to me this image represents the quintessential Brazilian afternoon – slow, colourful and sweet."

"This is my wife Paola paddle boarding in Piçinguaba, Brazil. I moved to Brazil to live with the most beautiful girl I ever met and was lucky enough to marry. I love taking pictures of Paola and together we have created a format where we produce content for hotels and destinations, making images that tell a story and have more life to them than the regular travel shots. Just like this one."
